TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR PET OWNERS
(For Pet Owners and Prospective Pet Owners)
1. My life is
likely to last 10 to 15 years. Any separation from you will be painful
for me.
2. Give me time to understand what you want from me. Do
not break my spirit with your temper, though I will
always forgive you. Your patience and understanding will
teach me more quickly those things you want me to learn.
3. Have me spayed or neutered.
4. Treat me kindly, my friend, for no heart in all the world is more
grateful for your kindness than mine. Don't be angry with me for long,
and don't lock or chain me up as punishment. After
all, you have your job, your friends, your entertainment. I
have only you.
5. Speak to me often. Even if I don't understand all your words, I
understand your voice when it is speaking to me.
6. Please give me shelter when it is cold and wet. I am a domestic
animal and am no longer accustomed to the bitter elements. I ask for
little more than your gentle hands petting me. Keep my bowl filled with
clean water; I cannot tell you when I am thirsty. Feed me good food so
that I may stay well, to romp and play, to be your friend, and stand
ready, willing and able to share with you my life, for that is what I
live for. However you treat me, I will never forget it.
7. Don't hit me. Remember, I have teeth that could easily hurt
but I choose not to use them.
8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask
yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I am
not feeling well or my heart may be getting old and weak.
9. Take care of me when I get old. You will grow old, too.
10. When I am very old, when I no longer enjoy good health,
please do not make heroic efforts to keep me going. I am not having fun.
Just see to it that my trusting life is taken gently.
and be with me on that difficult journey when it is time to say goodbye.
Never say, “I can't bear to watch”. Everything is easier for me when you
are there. I will leave this earth knowing with my last breath that my
fate was always safest in your hands. I love you.
DO I GO HOME TODAY?
My family brought me home all cradled in their arms.
They cuddled me, and smiled at me, and said I was full of charm.
They played with me and laughed with me; they showered me
with toys.
I sure did love my family, especially the girls and the boys.
The children loved to feed me; they gave me special treats.
They even let me sleep with them, all snuggled in the sheets.
I used to go for long walks, often several times a day.
They even fought to hold the leash, I'm very proud to say.
These are things I'll never forget, a cherished memory--for
Now I live in a shelter, without my family.
They used to laugh and praise me when I played with that old shoe,
But I didn't know the difference between the old ones and the new.
The kids and I would grab a rag, for hours we would tug.
So, I thought I did the right thing when chewing the bathroom rug.
They said I was out of control, and would have to live outside.
This, I didn't understand--although I tried and tried.
The walks stopped, one by one; they said they hadn't the time.
I wish that I could change things; I wish I knew my crime.
My life became so lonely in the back yard on a chain. I barked and
barked all day long to keep from going insane.
So, they brought me to the shelter, but were embarrassed to say why.
They said I caused an allergy, and each one then kissed me goodbye.
"You have only one day left" I heard the worker say.
Does that mean a Second Chance? Do I go Home Today? |
